How much does a Gattinara DOCG cost? A price guide

How much does a good bottle of Gattinara DOCG cost? The typical range goes from roughly 20-25 euros for entry labels to 35-50 euros for riservas, up to over 60-70 euros for special selections produced only in the best vintages. These are producer prices: in restaurants or abroad the same bottles can cost significantly more.

What is inside that price? First of all, time. The Gattinara DOCG regulations require at least 3 years of aging, at least 2 of them in oak barrels, before the wine can be sold; for the Riserva it rises to 4 years. This means the producer holds each vintage in the cellar for years before seeing any return. Then there is the yield: the volcanic hills of Gattinara are a small area, with often steep vineyards worked by hand, where quantity is sacrificed for quality.

The comparison everyone makes is with Barolo, the other great Piedmontese Nebbiolo. At a comparable quality level, Gattinara generally costs significantly less: the appellation is less known to the general public and its prices do not yet carry the media prestige component of the Langhe. This is why many enthusiasts and sommeliers now consider it one of Italy's best value age-worthy reds.

In our winery the price list follows this logic. The Nebbiolo DOC Coste della Sesia is the gateway to the territory, the Gattinara DOCG with 3 years of aging in large barrels is the heart of production, the Gattinara Riserva DOCG with 4 years is the selection, and the "Cesare" Riserva, 5 years in a custom-built barrel and produced only in the best vintages, is the summit. Up-to-date prices for each label are always visible on the official online shop, VAT included.

One last criterion for judging whether a price is fair: longevity. A well-stored Gattinara DOCG shows its best between 8 and 12 years from the harvest, and a Riserva can easily go beyond 15-20. Spread over the years the bottle keeps evolving in the cellar, the price weighs far less than it seems at the moment of purchase.

The usual advice: be wary of prices that are too low for the appellation, which often hide poor storage or declining vintages, and buy directly from the producer whenever possible. You pay the list price, the provenance is certain, and advice on vintages and pairings comes free.
